How To Use MyFitnessPal To Track Macros

Ifyou're looking for a simple guide to help you figure out how to track macros using MyFitnessPal, read this post.

Follow the steps below to track macros using MyFitnessPal

USING THE APP

1. Download MyFitnessPal for iTunes or Android

2. Calculate your macronutrients using my macronutrient calculator

3. Within the app select the 'More' tab on the bottom menu bar

4. Select 'Goals'

5. Under 'Nutrition Goals' select 'Calorie & Macronutrient Goals'

6. Change the percentages of your macros to adjust your grams. Unless you paid for MyFitnessPal premium, you will not be able to set your goals to the exact gram. Instead, you will choose percentages and get your grams as close as possible. Your total percentage must equal 100% before the app will allow you to set your goals.

USING THE WEBSITE

1. Log in to the website

2. From the My Home tab select 'Goals'

3. Under Daily Nutrition Goals you will again adjust your macro goals by percentage, following the steps above. If you set up your goal on the site, all of your changes will automatically sync to your mobile apps.

As you track your foods throughout the day, your calorie breakdown and percentages for protein, carbs and fat will update on your mobile devices.

More Information for Tracking Macros Using MyFitnessPal

FOOD LIBRARY

MyFitnessPal has been my preferred calorie tracker since I started my fitness journey. It has an extensive catalog of food, and more than any of its competitors. You'll even be shocked to find many smaller brand food listed in the app.

CUSTOMIZATION

Track What You Need

From the website you can also choose which micronutrients you want to track. I like to keep track of sugar in addition to my protein, carbs, and fat. Once you make the change on the website, it automatically updates on the app. You will then have the ability to view and track exactly what you need in order to achieve your fitness goal.

Add or Delete Meal Sections

Nearly everything about the food diary can be changed to suit your needs. When you just start out using the app the food diary will come standard with 6 meal sections. Using the website, if you need more or less meals, simply click 'settings' under the My Home Tab. Not only can you add or delete meal sections but you can rename them. With macro counting or IIFYM I find it's easier just to name my meals: Meal #1, Meal #2, Meal #3 and so on.

Add Your Favorite Recipes

The beauty of tracking macros with MyFitnessPal is that you can make your own macro friendly meals, enter the serving size, and add them to the recipes tab of the app. This is a great way to insure even your own culinary creations fit into your macro diet plan.

AVAILABLE MULTIPLE PLATFORMS

MyFitnessPal is available or your mobile device, tablets, and your computer. This means you can always track your macros no matter which device you're using. One way this is beneficial is for meal prepping. You use your computer to plan out your macros and meals, then simply allow it to update your mobile devices.

VERIFIED NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

MyFitnessPal uses a community contribution method to insure its food library is as large as possible. This is why you can many times find accurate nutritional information for even obscure foods. However, this also means the library has a lot of entries in it that are inaccurate. The best way to know you are getting the correct nutrition facts is to look for the green 'verified' symbol.

PREMIUM VERSION

MyFitnessPal offers a premium version that includes features such as setting up your macronutrient goals by the gram, setting different daily macronutrient goals for carb cycling, and quick add macronutrients.

Consistency is the key to achieving your fitness goals, so a high quality calorie tracker will be your greatest tool. Let me know in the comments if you found this guide to tracking macros with MyFitnessPal helpful!
