I have a theory, Halloween is actually ten times better as an adult than it is as a child. We still get to indulge in all the creativity and fun of dressing up, but have no limits on candy intake or curfew. As a kid, Halloween nights in my neighborhood started to shut down around 8 or 9 o’clock as we all had to prepare for school the next day, and candy privileges stopped even earlier.

As an “adult” (a label I am still not quick to own, but am learning to accept), Halloween goes all night long! Regardless of what your plans are this year-whether you’re grabbing your best girlfriends and heading out to party as a squad, or rocking a solo fit to a neighbor’s house, we’ve got you covered.

It’s no secret that the inspiration behind some of the best Halloween costumes comes from popular culture. The plethora of new shows, movies, and media icons has given us a vast array of characters to choose from, especially as women continue to make strides in these industries.

There is not a day that has gone by this year where I was not moved, touched, inspired, or emboldened by a woman’s story. We are brave, bold, and we should carry this same feminine badassness into the fun and scare-filled traditions of Halloween night!

This year, ditch the stereotypical nurse or witch outfit from Party City, and try dressing up as some of the most popular characters and stars of 2018!

Keep reading to find the best pop culture-themed outfits and cheap ways for you to rock them this spooky season:

Dora Milaje

Marvel’s Black Panther, which was released earlier this February, was one of the biggest international cinematic hits of all time. The film was epic and one of the best parts was the all female army that protected the King Panther at all costs. Traveling as a group in this costume will surely send a message that you and your crew are not just fierce warriors, but even fiercer friends.

What to Wear: No need to feel overwhelmed by the idea. You can actually buy the full costume here on Amazon.

Pro Tip: Add a stocking cap over your head that matches your skin color to mirror the Dora army’s signature shaved heads.

Ocean’s 8

When Ocean’s 8 was released this summer, it made history for being the first of the franchise’s multiple films to feature an all female cast. It also broke records and marched its way on to become the franchise’s highest grossing film with a stellar cast that included Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and many more. What to Wear: An assortment of all black, heeled booties, leather accents, and your best secret spy smirk.

Orange Is The New Black

If you haven’t already heard-Netflix favorite Orange Is The New Black is coming to an end. Season 7, which will be released in 2019, will be the show’s final go around, so this is one of the best times to dress up as everyone’s favorite group of female felons.

What to Wear: This costume is so easy to pull off. All you need to do is grab these khaki scrubs or these mandarin scrubs from Amazon and select 2-day shipping.

Pro Tip: Have some extra fun by drawing on an assortment of tattoos and making your own prisoner badges.

Josie and the Pussycats

Thanks to one of the year’s most popular television shows, the CW’s Riverdale, Josie and the Pussycats have re-claimed their time in the spotlight. The show itself is a toss up for me-ridiculously dramatic, but great for a guilty pleasure night. Regardless, Josie and Co. make a fierce trio-so gather up your girls, and take a fresh and timely spin on the traditional cat costume. No musical experience required!

What to Wear: If you don’t want to go for a full cat costume, try a beige shirt, tight black pants, and some feline accessories. For kinkier and curlier hair, let it loose or wear in a classic puff! Josie is a free spirit and the fro is going to compliment those cat ears all too well. Also, you can grab Josie’s full accessory kit here on Amazon, easy peasy.

Pro Tip: Nothing makes a costume quite like the props, bring along a tambourine if you can find one and be sure to stand in formation as much as possible throughout the night.

Beyoncé’s Coachella Backup Dancers

I’m convinced that the only people working just as hard as Beyoncé in the entertainment industry, are her dancers. Always strong, always coordinated, always beautiful, and always on point, I want to be a backup dancer when I grow up. Head out with as many friends as you’d like in support of Queen B!

What to Wear: A yellow leotard, white gloves, thigh high white boots, and a yellow beret. This long-sleeved yellow bodysuit comes in almost the exact same color as Beyonce’s Coachella Backup dancers and it comes in many different sizes. This yellow beret is also available. These white Tuxedo Parade gloves complete the look!

Pro Tip: Use craft store supplies to embellish the beret to your liking. Just be sure to use light pink accent colors and get creative!

Cardi B As A Child Meme

Cardi B had a seemingly fantastic year. In addition to dropping her platinum solo album Invasion of Privacy, winning awards, and dominating the music industry, she also started a family with her husband, a rapper in the popular Atlanta-formed group Migos. However, this picture of her which instantly went viral in an assortment of memes may have truly been her greatest accomplishment of 2018. Now, let it be the greatest costume amongst all your friends.

What to Wear: A starchy white blouse, a color blocked tube top like this one available at Forever21, and sweatpants.

Pro tip: If you can’t get a color-blocked tube top in time, try a solid top like this one amazon and stitch or glue on a piece of accent fabric from you local craft/fabric store. And don’t forget to keep your hand on your hip all night long.

Dr. Meredith Grey

The legendary character Meredith Grey of the Shonda Rhimes-helmed Grey’s Anatomy celebrated the start of her 15th season this year. Grey, played by TV icon Ellen Pompeo, is still going strong as the leader of the medical drama which changed the landscape of television all those years ago. So much so, that earlier this year it was announced that Pompeo would be making at least 20 million dollars-an unprecedented amount for any star or leader of a show. It might be nice to spend a night as a millionaire TV doctor, even if it is all pretend.

What to Wear: These light blue scrubs, this white lab coat, and white sneakers.

Pro Tip: Again, props are your friends! Try to nab a stethoscope to hang around your neck or, if you’re feeling particularly gruesome, some fake blood to splatter on your coat.

Beyoncé in the “Apeshit” Music Video

Don’t have enough people to make the Coachella backup dancers outfit idea work? No problem-just be Beyoncé instead. Specifically, Beyoncé in the music video of “Apeshit,” one of the most popular songs off her most recent album Everything is Love. The album, which was released along with husband Jay Z, dropped earlier this year and this music video is one of the few we got along with it. Check out the video, jam out to the song, then be prepared to kill the Halloween costume competition.

What to Wear: A low-cut pink suit and as many diamonds as humanly possible. I found this pink suit jacket on Amazon that is perfect for your costume as well as these fuchsia pants and this statement necklace.

Pro Tip: You may not be able to get Beyoncé-length blonde bundles to add to your hair by Halloween, but the half-up half-down style she wears in the video will pull the look all together.

Ariana Grande in the “God is a Woman” Music Video

This just may be the most fun option seeing as some DIY, old-school arts-n-crafts are necessary to complete the costume. Grande’s music video to “God is a Woman,” the catastrophic hit off her fourth studio album Sweetener, has already garnered over 140 million views on YouTube since it’s release a few months ago. The pop anthem is still a regular on the radio so yes, you probably will be expected to belt all night long.

What to Wear: This skin-colored full body suit on Amazon and lots of this pastel colored paint!

Pro Tip: Be sure to use washable paint so that bodysuit can be used another night!

Duchess Meghan Markle

Royalty for a day? Count me in. The world wept this year watching the beautiful royal wedding between Prince Harry of the UK and American actress and activist Meghan Markle. The new duchess has stepped down from her work and home in the States to attend to her newfound royal responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still revel in her special day!

What to Wear: This white bridal inspired dress or this off-shoulder ruffled dress, this tiara and veil, white heels, and a flower bouquet.

Pro Tip: If you can, wear shorts under your dress with something round stuffed inside to honor Markle’s new baby bump.
