Last season, Orange is the New Black was a riot. A prison riot, that is. And it didn’t just shake things up last year. The consequences of the riot play out in season 6 in a totally different way than we’ve ever seen on the show. Alliances have been torn apart. The inmates are in serious trouble. And we’re no longer at Litchfield. While some characters have been put in maximum security, others are seemingly gone and never even appear again at all. TV isn’t like it used to be. We don’t have to follow the same characters in the same place every season as if nothing ever happens. True to real life, things change whether we want them to or not. Did your favorite characters make the cut or did they board a bus for a prison in Ohio?
Boo only appears briefly in one episode
In an early episode of season 6, we see Big Boo, Skinhead Helen, Alison and Linda “from purchasing” who is still being mistaken as an inmate, as they wait in line to get their heads shaved. It appears they were shipped to Cleveland along with others from Litchfield. The self-proclaimed Butch (with the tattoo to flaunt it), was the loud and sometimes scary inmate who would make your life miserable, or in Pensatucky’s case, try to help you realize your own self-worth. Will she seek revenge on Linda for lying to her or will she disappear from the show completely?
The greatest BFFs in prison history are done
Most people can only dream of a more loyal, steady friendship than the one Flaca and Maritza share. That’s why it was so heartbreaking when we saw them torn apart last season after the riot ended and the guards wouldn’t let them board the same bus. The reunion we were all waiting for in season 6 never came. Flaca says that her best friend was taken to a prison somewhere in Ohio, possibly Cleveland with some of the other missing inmates. Who’s going to give us prison makeup tutorials? Who will have their backs now? Their airhead humor made the show bearable. Word is that Diane Guerrero who plays Maritza is now on the CBS show Super Donuts but that’s what contracts are for - maybe she made a deal for Season 7? Flaca/Maritza reunion special, please.
No more downward dog
Yoga Jones is gone. The hippie who taught the inmates how to balance their chakras didn’t make it to max this season. Will we find her teaching enlightenment to a new group of inmates? We haven’t had enough of her yet. Read Lindsay Denninger’s ideas for Yoga Jones backstory.
Is Brook in a better place?
Brook was seen on a bus with Maritza so maybe she’s in Ohio as well. Prison life has been hard on Brook. As someone with strong morals and beliefs in non-violence, she was thrust into a world where these beliefs are invalid. After mourning the loss of Poussey for most of last season, maybe Brook is in a better place, physically and emotionally? We can only hope.
Maureen Kukudio is dead
Suzanne’s ex-girlfriend Maureen Kukudio died from her injuries after she was made to fight her. After killing CO Humphrey in the infirmary, it’s revealed that Maureen also passed away. It’s a real heavy moment for the show (which is why we need Flaca and Maritza to cheer us up!).
Meth is out
Meth-heads Angie Rice and Leanne Taylor are missing this season. There’s not much known about their whereabouts or if they’re together. Leanne had a detailed backstory play out, showing her having grown up in an Amish family. We got attached to these troublemakers, although they were also really annoying to most of the inmates.
Alison and Janae get separated from Taystee and Cindy
Taystee and Cindy have a lot to work through in season 6. But Alison and Janae are missing, separated from Taystee and Cindy at the end of season 5. Are they together in an Ohio prison or somewhere else in the U.S.? Alison was the show’s first (and only?) Muslim character and Janae was a track star who ended up robbing a store with her boyfriend. Are their character arcs over? Will the gang (along with Suzanne) ever be reunited?
