October 10th was annual World Mental Health Day, officially decreed by the World Health Organization. The day was created “with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. [It] provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide” (World Health Organization, 2018).

It’s no secret that we value and encourage mental health and all the ways to maintain it here at I AM & CO. Just like any other body part, the mind and spirit have to be nourished, exercised, and cared for if we want to lead abundant, fruitful lives.

For many however, mental health takes a back burner to the bustling necessities of everyday life including work, school, children, relationships, even pursuing our dreams. If this is the case for you, then I implore you to stop, take a breath, and find a moment, as small as it may be, to check in with yourself. The road to mental wellness is a long, neverending one. It requires us to stay active.

Unfortunately, mental health physicals for work or school aren’t always a requirement-we have to choose to take care of ourselves. World Mental Health Day is essential to bringing attention to these topics. And while raising awareness may be the first step, it’s on you to make the next one.

My own mental health journey and self-care practice is something I continue to discover as I get older; it’s constantly evolving. I have to make conscious efforts to stay on top of my emotions, unpack my reactions to a situation, and truly ask myself what it is that I need in any given moment.

One thing that has always helped me to stay grounded is reading affirmations or positive messages, many of which I read on different celebrities’ pages.
