If you didn’t already know, Insecure is back. The show follows late 20-something-year-old Issa, the namesake of real-life show creator and writer Issa Rae, as she tries to maneuver complicated relationships, challenging friendships, and a fizzling career in rapidly gentrifying Southern Los Angeles. The most recent episode found just about every character in a weird new space. Issa has an idea to throw a community block party in support of local artists but is turned off by the amount of work and time that will have to go into it. Molly is still caught up trying to control every aspect of her life and rejects a cute guy she met at Coachella weekend in the process. A very pregnant Tiffany hosts the baby shower of the century, but much of the magical day is wrought with tension between her “mom” and “non-mom” friends. A very non-pregnant Kelli feels as if Tiffany is abandoning her and all of their history of being best friends, for her new baby.

Episode 6 of HBO’s Insecure, posed a lot of questions about what it means to be “ready”-ready to have a child, ready to enter a new relationship, ready to grow apart from an old one, or ready to venture out on your own for the very first time. Tiffany, Molly, Kelli, and Issa, respectively, spend the episode trying to find the answer to this question.

Tiffany fully embraces pregnancy but notes that it is driving a wedge between her and her “non-mom” friends, especially Kelli. Her entire bridal shower is curated by “The Crazy Crew,” a hysterically accurate name for the bougie group of mom friends that the rest of our posse (Issa, Molly, and Kelli) did not even know Tiffany had. Kelli is not sure that she is ready to let her friendship with Tiffany go and consistently feels like she is being cut out of Tiffany’s new life.

Molly is asked out on a date by a member of the Coachella crew from episode 5 but rejects his offer because she does not see any potential of a future with him. After the messy ending with Dro, she does not know if she is ready or willing to enter into any relationship that won’t last for the long haul. Post-”We Got Y’all” Issa has a grand idea of throwing a block party that would support local artists and give back to her immediate community. The barrage of required licenses and paperwork, however, dissuades her, and she is unsure if she is ready to take on this venture alone.

It is hard to determine when any of us are truly ready for big changes in our lives. We get so used to a relationship, job, or way of life, we forget that change is the most inevitable factor of it all. And, more times than not, it’s completely out of our control. Kelli may not love the fact that her best friend’s pregnancy is causing her to grow distant, but in reality, it makes perfect sense that Tiffany would start seeking help from other mothers. Molly may not love the fact that the only man to ask her out isn’t her idea of Prince Charming, but as Issa argues, she has to stay open to all types of love if she ever wants to receive it. There is no doubt that Issa should be scared of her new business venture; it is going to be complicated and time-consuming and incredibly difficult given the fact that she gave up her full-time job. However, she should also relish in the opportunity to do something new and stamp her own name on it. Perhaps, being “ready” for change, should not be our goal, but rather being accepting of it.

According to the post-episode promo, there are only two episodes left this season. Like so many fans, I’m extremely curious to see how the rest of the season will be wrapped up in such a short amount of time. With so many loose ends and undefined relationships, it’s a great thing that HBO has already picked up our show for season 4!
